Galway Ladies 1st XI (2) v (1) Ballymena Ladies 1st XI

Saturday 7th January

Irish Hockey Trophy

Ballymena travelled to Galway on Saturday for their IHT match with Galway.  The home side started strongest forcing Ballymena to defend early on and eventually conceding the lead to a back post touch from a left wing cross!  Ballymena reacted immediately winning a penalty corner that was disallowed, giving the home side the lead at halftime.

Into the second half and Galway again increased their lead after ten minutes to 2-0.  As the half progressed tension was high and several members of both sides paid the penalty for indiscipline, but finally Ballymena reduced the lead from a penalty corner where Aimee Logan netted the rebound to make it 2-1.

Pressure from Ballymena in the last moments of the game couldn’t draw the girls level and the match ended 2-1 to Galway.

Ballymena Men’s 1st XI (3) v (1) Cliftonville Men’s 2nd XI

Saturday 7th January

Junior League 4

This weekend saw the return of league fixtures with Ballymena facing a strong looking Cliftonville side. Ballymena started the match the better with crisp passing and good possession. The visitors could not cope with the movement or pace of the home attacks, where the constant pressure resulted in the first goal of the match from a penalty corner. The initial shot was saved however Chris Hogg was able to deal with the rebound slotting home a tricky bouncing ball. After another attack and shot, the ball broke to Alex McKeown at the top of the D who smashed it past the keeper for a 2 goal lead. Ballymena’s third just before the halftime break saw Whitten and Linford exchange passes before Andrew Lorimer tidied up with a tap in, with the keeper beaten.

In the second half Ballymena started a bit slower, inviting Cliftonville into their half. The passing wasn't as fluid and mistakes started to creep into their game. Cliftonville scored from a breakaway goal. After this the hosts shut down the Cliftonville attacks and started playing similar to the first half moving the ball better with Paul Beattie, Craig Davis and Victor Orr controlling the midfield. Glenn Whitten was a constant outlet who had multiple reverse stick shots however these were all saved or blocked. Attack after attack, brought little success in front of goal for Ballymena through a combination of good Cliftonville goalkeeping and lack of clinical finishing.  Finishing at 3-1 this holds Ballymena close to the top of Junior 4.  Thanks to Davy Lorimer for umpiring.

NICS Men’s 4th XI (4) v (1) Ballymena Men’s 2nd XI

Friday 6th January

Junior League 6

Ballymena struggled to compete for much of the first half of his match against a strong Service line up who moved the ball with pace, forcing the visitors to track their opposition all over the pitch!  Ballymena’s defence held strong for the first fifteen minutes before the continual pressure took its toll, with Service scoring three times in the first half, despite the efforts of young Matthew Orr in goals, who denied several further chances with some excellent keeping skills!

Ballymena’s few chances came through tireless work up front, but these were quickly closed down.

Into the second half and Ballymena found more space and time to play the ball, which helped relieve the pressure on the defence.  Penalty corners saw Nicholl and Hanna have shots on target saved, but as Service added their fourth it was late in the game before Ballymena got any reward with a consolation goal from Ethan Archer to make it 4-1 to NICS.  The team would like to thanks Dave Bradley for umpiring
