Cookstown Ladies 1st XI (0) v (2) Ballymena Ladies 1st XI

Saturday 28th January

Senior League 1

A determined ladies 1st XI travelled to Cookstown this week aiming to continue their improved League form.  Working hard from the off, Ballymena secured a penalty corner that gave them the lead from a Catherine McCracken drive into the corner.  Brimming with confidence Ballymena defended with passion while continuing to press the home defence, but struggled to convert further chances. Late in the half Kirsten Young almost doubled the score following another penalty corner, but her attempt was just wind giving Ballymena the slender one goal advantage at the break!

Cookstown began the second half looking for the equaliser, but strong defending kept Ballymena the lead.  Winning further penalty corners the visitors found it difficult to make them count, but eventually Ballymena’s patience paid off, when Kirsten Young picked up a nimble slip pass from the top of the circle to slot home under the advancing Cookstown keeper to secure the victory 2-0.

The girls continue in the league next week away to Knock.

Ballymena Men’s 1st XI (1) v (3) Newry Men’s 3rd XI

Saturday 28th January

Junior League 4

Ballymena hosted Newry at the Academy Grounds on Saturday and having comfortably won away to Newry earlier in the season went into the game confident of a positive result. However, as the match got underway it was evident that this was a much changed Newry side.

Ballymena struggled to establish control in the game and the opening half passed with meaningful chances for either side few and far between.

Newry started the stronger of the two teams in the second half and were duly rewarded with a quick goal. This was soon to be followed with a second, after a Newry forward was given far too much space on the right wing to pick out a ball to the back post for a tap in.

Ballymena did pull one back through a Lorimer penalty corner strike but it was Newry who wrapped the game up with a repeat of their second goal to bring the final score to 3-1. Ballymena will have to reflect, before they meet Portrush in Ballycastle next Friday night!

Parkview Men’s 1st XI (6) v (0) Ballymena Men’s 2nd XI

Saturday 28th January

Junior League 6

Ballymena gave Parkview an early lead in this match and never really recovered.  In the first half Ballymena found it difficult to keep possession and convert several good chances, going into the break 2-0 down.

The second half was a much better performance from the visitors, but with several penalty corners and further shots on target from Nicholl, Moody and Hanna being denied by an athletic keeper in the Parkview goal, it just wasn’t meant to be! Ballymena lost key players Grimason then Glass to injury in the half as Parkview stung Ballymena several times with a long ball up field and added four more goals to run out victors by 6 goals to nil.

This was a tough result for Ballymena who now play Armagh 2nds at home next week, at the Academy.

Team: M. Orr(GK), D. McDowell, A. Hanna, P. Moody(C), J. Grimason, D. Bradley, W. Barr,

P. Montgomery J. Hutchinson, P. Nicholl, S. Gordon, S. Lamont, S. Glass.
