Ballymena Ladies 2nd XI (2) v (0) Portadown Ladies 2nd XI

Saturday 17th December

Junior League 2

Ballymena 2nds started the second half of their league season at home to leaders Portadown, hoping to avenge their earlier 3-0 defeat at Edenvilla in the first match of the season!

Playing into the low winter sun, Ballymena quickly found their rhythm and took the game to the visitors with good possession play and movement.  McClintock and Logan in midfield worked tirelessly to close down the ball and this was rewarded when a good right wing drive resulted in a cross into the circle falling to the back post for Rachel Whyte to slot home for a Ballymena lead, which they held to the half time break.

Into the second half and Portadown changed formation to push additional players forward but Ballymena’s defence held strong to deny an equaliser.  A penalty corner and goal mouth scramble on the right post almost brought Portadown level, but for the efforts of Lauren Hanna in goal and Emma Clarke and Ashleigh Harbinson tidying up to deny the chances!

Ballymena continued to attack on the break using both flanks to their advantage and for a second time Rachel Whyte came up with the goods on the back post to guide the ball past the advancing keeper for a 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes to go.

Shoring up the defence, Ballymena tackled defiantly to the end to take the 3 points at the final whistle!  With a break now to the 7th January the team resume their campaign away to Ards.  Thanks to Joanne David and Phil Moody for umpiring the game

Castle Ladies 2nd XI (1) v (0) Ballymena Ladies 3rd XI

Saturday 17th December

Junior League 5

Ballymena 3rds travelled to Carrick on Saturday to play Castle 2nds. Ballymena started strongly, creating an early chance but were unable to score! Castle passed the ball well and put pressure on the Ballymena defence time and again, although Ballymena cleared the danger throughout the first half.

Throughout the second half Ballymena fell fowl of several penalty corners, which again they were able to defend.  However in the final 5 minutes of the game Caste again won another penalty corner, where they finally made the tally count against the visitors to score and take the game by 1-0.  The team would like to thank Mary Glass for travelling to umpire.
